After spending a very happy 18 months in Stevenage at the Business & Technology Centre, Walking Forward have moved back to Cambridgeshire. It made sense. Gavin lives there and Rory moved to the greener surroundings of Abbotsley last year – quite a change from Brixton!

Learning Technologies Event 2013

Walking Forward are proud to announce that they will be exhibiting at the Learning Technologies event at Olympia, London on 29th & 30th January 2013.

Come and visit us at stand 123b and grab your free Walking Forward pen or if you’re lucky, Gavin may even stump up the price of a coffee. Autumn tours, already?!

Time flies by so fast at Walking Forward and we can’t believe that we are starting to get ready for our Autumn tours again so soon!

The rise of UK road related deaths: the true cost of cutting back on educational funding

It’s fair to say that we as a company have been hit fairly hard with all of the government cut backs, especially with regard to road safety education within schools and colleges. Two years ago TfL cut funding for two of our successful theatre productions that dealt with important issues of road safety. The two shows had been touring across London boroughs with much success for several years. The Price played to audiences aged 12-13 years, educating them about the dangers of not being responsible or paying attention on the roads, whilst Wasted, aimed at ages 14 and above, introduced issues of passenger responsibility, the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as the choices you have when facing pressure from irresponsible drivers. Although Walking Forward can’t take all of the credit for numbers of fatalities and casualties on UK roads dwindling in recent years, we can be proud to say we were part of a process that was getting messages through and was actually working. Over the years, local governments had gradually developed many methods of road safety awareness, helping to bring numbers of fatalities and casualties down. We were part of that continual conditioning process. Our powerful messages were carefully designed to make children and teenagers think differently, giving them an experience they could remember in a safe environment, and educating them about their choices on the roads.

I spoke to one Road Safety Manager recently (a manager to himself alone after his five team members were made redundant last year!) who told me that they don’t have any funding to do any education in schools anymore and that he spends his time simply managing school crossing patrols. Another told me that unless the number of child casualties on roads go up again, they weren’t prepared fund theatre tours aimed at children at all. Well, guess what? The numbers ARE rising again, so as a country we better start thinking about reintroducing the educational methods that were used five, six and seven years ago that WERE actually working!

The cost of one lost life on a UK road is far greater than a whole year’s worth of educational film and theatre! And, if gripping, dramatic, moving films, and in particular interactive films were utilised effectively all over the UK, within classrooms and workplaces, then millions of pounds and, more importantly, thousands of lives could be saved each year. Surely that makes sense doesn’t it?!

Autumn tour in full swing

The busy period gets under way. Our show Deadly Mates has been settling nicely into it’s 11 week tour of Wales. Nik, Sian and Sion are doing a fantastic job under the direction of Nerys Lewis.

We have now finalised the cast for Never Saw The Day and The Price; rehearsals begin on Monday for two weeks before they’re off on their whistle stop tour of the country.

Then we’ve got Wasted coming up in November and then finally we can relax. The glass of wine at the end will be a big one.

Mmmm – sound familiar?

We’ve recently found out that a very ex-employee and spouse who, shall we say… won’t be working for us (and other companies) any time soon, has formed a Road Safety theatre company with a primary school show very, very similar to our own ‘Cat Ninelives in Deepest Trubble’. What’s that about ‘ …the greatest form of flattery’? Well, we and our lawyers are watching carefully. Perhaps anyone who books up this company should ask some very leading questions?

Holiday? What Holiday!?

No time for holidays this year as we have four – possibly five tours out this Autumn and we’re just launched our new corporate video website www.walkingforwardmedia.co.uk.

Yes times may be hard, but we’ll still produce the same top quality theatre that we always have, even if the tours are shorter!
So, for those of you who have somehow managed to weather the storm, why not put your hard earned budget in safe hands and book up some resources with a proven track record.

New evaluation method is the way to go.

Walking Forward have now run their brand new evaluation trial – and so far so good! The online survey is good for the environment, fun, easy to complete and has had an excellent response from clients wishing to evaluate their initiatives.
The collection of data is simple and allows us to give our clients easily understandable responses, whilst giving in depth analysis – and what’s more, can be tailored made for each individual customer.
In these uncertain times every project has to be evaluated to make sure of best value, best service and best impact for the budget.

Deadly Mates starts 6 week tour

Our new production of Deadly Mates will have its first performance on Monday. We are delighted that it will be visiting over 55 secondary schools in North Wales and we hope it will be shown to plenty more schools across Wales and the rest of the UK in the not too distant future. There will be a Press Launch on October 18th and we hope to have some production photographs and a short video very soon!
